On the heels of the historic election of new and diverse progressive voices to city hall, Mayor John Tory is working closely with Doug Ford to pass a disturbingly undemocratic power grab (Bill 39) that allows the mayor to win votes with the support of only a third of city councillors. Over 7,000 people across Toronto have signed our petition, hundreds helped to pack the November City Council meeting, and two thirds of local councillors have now come out on record opposed to Bill 39. The pressure is mounting and with City Council taking place on December 14 where Bill 39 will be discussed, this is our time act. Mayor Tory needs to renounce these powers and all councillors need to speak out against this undermining of our local democracy.
